The School of Air Traffic Services conducts a wide range of air traffic control (ATC) operations and management courses for controllers, airspace planners and managers; including programmes on CNS/ATM systems. Realistic and practical training is provided incorporating state-of-the-art ATC training simulators.
Practical Approach to Training
The School provides highly practical and personalised training. All instructors are operationally qualified. Practical training constitutes 75% of the total instructional time. Instructor-student ratio is maintained at 1:1 for practical exercises. To keep up-to-date with their professional skills, instructors are regularly rotated between the School and the operational units of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).
While 95% of the total instructional time is met by national instructors drawn from CAAS, overseas and local experts are also invited to provide insights on the latest trends and developments in air traffic services.
To provide realistic training, the School is equipped with advanced ATC simulators and other training facilities costing more than US$13 million. The simulators incorporate state-of-the-art features which are specially designed and developed to provide realistic training and to reduce the time needed for on-the-job training. The School uses surveillance, procedural and aerodrome control simulators for different aspects of air traffic control training. The Air Traffic Controller's Desktop Flight Simulator is also used in the training of primary air traffic control as well as search and rescue.
