Mr Kurt Menal
Civil Aviation Officer – Safety and Security
Ministry of External Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation, Saint Lucia

Childhood fantasies can sometimes shape the course of one’s life in unexpected ways. Such is the case for Mr Kurt Menal, whose passion for aviation is deeply rooted in his fascination with flight as a young boy.

The notion of flying has always intrigued Kurt. He reminisced with a sparkle in his eyes, “It amazed me that something so large and metallic can get off the ground and stay aloft.”

This interest and curiosity with flight spurred Kurt to enter the aviation industry as an aeronautical information service officer after college. His passion for the industry is evident in his concern for the aviation landscape in his native Saint Lucia and the Caribbean at large. He sees the active engagement of the younger generation as a critical step towards raising the profile of the aviation sector. Kurt shared, “We need to demonstrate the career opportunities available, link it to the tourism industry and position it as an economic driver for our country and our region because aviation is a global tool.”

“I recently gave a talk on aviation at my alma mater. The boys were very receptive and it felt good to be able to talk and inspire a much younger generation.”

Kurt’s family, particularly his three young daughters, share his unfaltering excitement for all things aviation-related and are his steadfast pillars of support. He explained, “When I’m away I stay in touch using technology so they’re just a click away. The kids are growing up fast and I don’t want to miss too much.”

Kurt constantly looks beyond his horizons to better equip and qualify himself. “Getting the Aviation Leaders Scholarship for SAA’s Diploma in Civil Aviation was a major achievement for me. This is something that I will never forget and will use in life and in aviation,” he enthused. “I felt humbled and privileged, considering that I’m from a small, developing island State. There are no words for how I felt.”
