Aircraft Accidents Crisis Preparedness and Management Conference, 22-24 Mar 2010

More than 120 aviation professionals from 28 countries gathered at SAA to attend the Aircraft Accidents Crisis Preparedness and Management Conference on 22-24 April 2010 to deliberate on issues relating to crisis preparedness requirements in aircraft accidents management.

The Conference, which was organised to address the importance of emergency preparedness and effectiveness in crisis management, highlighted the need for organisations’ detailed planning and preparation for aviation crisis.

In his welcome address, Mr Choi Shing Kwok, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport said, “It is our hope that the Conference will help to bridge the knowledge gap between strategic perspectives and operational viewpoints, and help raise the overall readiness level of the aviation sector’s emergency preparedness as a whole.”

The keynote address was delivered by Mr Marcus Costa, ICAO’s Chief of Accident Investigation and Prevention Section. He reinforced the importance and types of family assistance needed following a catastrophic accident.

Key topics including emergency preparedness, challenges for regulators, latest developments in air navigation and safety, legal considerations, family assistance, leadership in crisis, public information management and the establishment of a crisis management centre were addressed.
