SAA Cultural Night 2012

An annual tradition of SAA since 1994, the SAA Cultural Night is a time to celebrate friendships beyond borders, and was attended by over 100 participants from 45 countries this year. This year, the event held on 23 August 2012 also provided participants with a unique opportunity to learn, interact and network beyond the confines of the classroom, and gain a better understanding of the cultures and traditions of Singapore.

Participants and staff came dressed in their best ethnic costumes, and were treated to a bustling bazaar featuring traditional local delights such as ‘muah chee’, ‘kachang puteh’ and ‘teh tarik’. Equally popular were the activity stalls where participants had henna designs done on their hands and arms and tried their hand in Chinese calligraphy and ‘ketupat’ weaving. The evening’s programme line-up continued with performances at the SAA’s Sim Kee Boon Auditorium, kicking off with the Costume Parade where a vibrant mix of staff and participants showed off their traditional costumes to the incessant cheer of the crowd. The audience was also treated to heart-stopping performances by a Bhangra dance troupe and a Chinese martial arts group. Besides performances by course participants, SAA staff also took to the stage in a dramatic re-enactment of a Malay wedding. The evening ended on a high note, with DG of CAAS, Mr Yap Ong Heng leading the finale song ‘We Are The World’ much to the delight of the audience.

All in all, it was an evening full of laughter, good cheer and merriment.
