On 29 June 2015, the Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA) presented a talk under the SAA Aviation Insight Series (AvIS) on Minimising the Environmental of Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting (ARFF) Operations.
Sharing the session with over 40 aviation professionals was Dr Roger A Klein, an independent scientific consultant, a trained medical doctor and physical chemist at the University of Cambridge. Mr Adrian Lim, the Airport Emergency Services Principal Instructor, moderated the Questions and Answers session.
Dr Klein highlighted the need to conduct a suitable and sufficient assessment of environmental risk (SSAER) to minimise the impact of ARFF operations and introduced measures to mitigate the risk. He also shared with the audience the implications of not having adequate information of the substances found in firewater run-off, and further emphasised on background issues such as degradability and environment persistence.
