Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA) recently conducted an on-site training programme, Airworthiness Seminar at the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Training Academy in Accra, Ghana from 5 to 9 March 2012. This was the second on-site training programme conducted by SAA under the collaboration MOU between Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC). The seminar provided an overview to issues surrounding the concept of airworthiness as well as safety regulation and issues related to civil aviation operating under or influenced by ICAO requirements. It also aims to enable the participants to acquire a basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of safety oversight and basic core competency elements for the airworthiness inspector, including knowledge of safety regulations.
The seminar was conducted by Mr Kang Huei Wang (Head, School of Aviation Safety and Security, SAA) and Mr Tang Kok Liang (Head, Policy & Rulemaking, SPL). Mr Willie Orhin, Deputy Director General (Finance and Administration), GCAA, and Mr Mesfin Fikru, Director, Safety & Technical Services, AFCAC delivered the welcome address and opening address respectively. Twenty participants from seven different States in Africa (Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Mozambique, Niger, Senegal, South Africa,) attended the seminar.
On 7 March 2012, Mr Yap Ong Heng, Director General of CAAS hosted a reception for the alumni residing in Ghana, in the Best Western Premier Hotel, Accra, Ghana. The session provided participants with updates on the developments in SAA, such as upcoming new training programmes and the ICAO TRAINAIR PLUS certification. Mr Kang Huei Wang, also gave an update on global developments concerning aviation safety.
The reception was co-organised with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, who also arranged for the traditional Ghanaian dance performances. Attended by some 50 course participants and alumni members, it was a fruitful opportunity for our alumni to reminisce on their time in Singapore and to catch up with our SAA staff.
